Types of Receiver Hitches

There are many different types of trailer hitches that are available for todays vehicles. The most basic way to tow a trailer is with a simple trailer ball attached to a bumper. Many truck bumpers will carry a 1000 lb rating but only a 100 lb tongue weight rating. Some people will mistakenly damage the stock bumper by overloading it more that the 100 or 150 lb tongue weight rating that is recommended. The most popular variety of trailer hitch is the receiver hitch. A receiver hitch consists of a crosstube that is mounted directly to the frame and a removable bar that holds the trailer ball. The receiver hitch is designed to more evenly distribute the weight load onto the truck frame.

Multi-Fit Hitches

"Is this hitch one of those multi-fit hitches?" That's the question we get a lot at our retail store. Our immediate response is "No sir, we only sell custom fit hitches. Our insurance provider won't allow us to sell or install a universal hitch." We often times have to re-educate a customer as to the safe way to tow their boat, camper, or utility trailer. Many of these customers have received bad information about a universal, fit-all hitch from some "big box store" retail guy that can also sell them a toaster or a camera. We, on the other hand, sell and install hitches every day. We know how to make your towing experience a happy one.

Installing a Hitch

The first step in installing a hitch to any application is to read the instructions thoroughly. Sounds simple enough, but that is the one step that sometimes gets skipped. Many times the instructions will require you to lower an exhaust hanger or remove a bumper bracket for clearance issues in the installation process. This is common and you will probably be asked to re-install these brackets at the end of the installation.

Trailer Hitch Wiring

Wiring a trailer is not a hard job at all. It just takes a little time, patience and a lot of wire. The first fundamental step is to determine what type of connector it is that you will need to connect the trailer to the tow vehicle. The most common connectors are the 4 pin, 5 pin, 6 pin and the 7 pin. The diagrams for those can be found here.
